EPICURUS
THE MASTER OF PLEASURE
Method
Epicurus rejected dialectic as fruitless word play. His standards of truth are our sensations, preconceptions, conceptions and feelings:
"Our canon is that direct observation by sense and direct apprehension by the mind are alone invariably true."
(Diogenes Laertius X.62)
"In the study of nature we must not conform to empty assumptions and arbitrary laws, but follow the promptings of the facts; for then our life has no need of unreason and false opinion."
(Diogenes Laertius X.87)
Epicurean physics acknowledges two things only - matter, which is made up of small indivisible and unchangeable particles and space through which these particles move.
