ZENO
THE STOIC
Background
A Phoenecian business man, and citizen of Citium, Zeno was stranded in Athens through a shipwreck. What, for some would have been seen as misfortune, for Zeno, meant a change for the better. He became a disciple of the Cynic philosopher, Crates. He did not become a Cynic, according to Diogenes Laertius, because his "native modesty" could not assimilate Cynic "shamelessness". Instead, he developed a new school of thought which encouraged moderation. This came to be named Stoicism after the Greek word stoa , a covered area where most teachers of philosophy taught their followers.
