Parmenides is more concerned with the nature of the universe than with man or even man's place in the universe. For the early philosophers, the main task was to be able to explain the way things were without having to resort to religion and the gods. They were the original physicists in that they attempted to explain the nature of the physical universe, although they never tested their ideas through experiment - so long as you could argue the point well.
